Oscars 2022 Recap

I did not watch the Oscars on Sunday night. For one, I think it is overly long and self-indulgent, and two, I had to watch the finale of "The Last of Us." I watched the ceremony on Hulu over a few days this past week and fast-forwarded through many sections I didn't care about; no offense to the winners, but I'm a teacher and have minimal energy at the end of the day. I wanted to see the speeches from all the "Everything Everywhere All At Once"winners and the performances of "Naatu Naatu."

Best Supporting Actor: Ke Huy Quan

This was the one I wanted to watch the most. I was rooting for Quan more than any other nominee. Even knowing he would win, I teared up when his name was announced. This is a man who was in two blockbuster smashes as a kid ("Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" and "The Goonies") and never really found much more success after that. He was close to giving up on acting when he got this role, and it has reinvigorated his career.

Best Supporting Actress: Jamie Lee Curtis

My favorite moment of this win was seeing Jamie Lee Curtis say "Shut Up" as her name was announced. This was the most challenging category for me to pick a winner from. Angela Bassett owned every scene in "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," and I would have been ecstatic to see her win. I also would have loved to see Stephnie Shue (Everything Everywhere All At Once) or Kerry Condon (Banshees or Inisherian) win for their incredible roles.

Best Song: "Naatu Naatu"

I was bummed that the performance used lookalikes in lieu of the actors, but I understand. These are two of the biggest stars in India, and they didn't have time for rehearsals. I am so glad this won the best song award. Go watch it on YouTube and tell me this song is not incredible.

Best Actor: Brendan Fraiser

I have no intention of watching "The Whale." Many people whose opinions I respect have said it is an awful movie, and I do not feel the pressing need to watch it. I do, however, think Brendan Fraiser deserves everything. The man was essentially blacklisted when he accused The president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association of abuse. His career suffered until recently, and he deserves to be honored for everything he has done.

Best Actress: Michelle Yeoh

There was no one else who deserved it more. Cate Blanchett was terrific in "Tar," but Lydia Tar doesn't hold a candle to Evelyn Wang. Yeoh is always great, and this role is no exception. She carries this movie and plays multiple versions of Evelyn; they all feel different. It is a masterclass in acting.

Best Picture: Everything Everywhere All At Once

This was the little movie that could. It made more money for the studio, A24 than any other movie. It bucked expected box office trends by only dipping by single-digit percentages each week (most movies fall 40-60%). It found a passionate following with people who love it, and I count myself among them. Tom Crusie and "Top Gun: Maverick" might have saved the movies, but this movie reminded us why we go to the theater in the first place.
