Hill House Rewatch: Two Storms
This, right here, is my favorite episode of this show. "Two Storms" is a series of single-take scenes that occur during a stormy night at Sherily's funeral home in the present day and one at Hill House. If there is one episode I would tell people to watch, this is it.
To keep this somewhat coherent, I will tackle each storm separately.
In 1992, the Crane family get woken up by a massive storm. At one point, Nell goes missing. The rest of the kids stay downstairs in the front foyer while Hugh and Olivia look for her. When Hugh leaves Olivia to get more batteries for his flashlight, things start to get weird. Olivia looks in different rooms for Nell. A doorknob behind her starts to rattle. She opens the door, and a boy in a wheelchair is there. He moves past her, down the hall, and disappears. When Hugh eventually returns, he finds Olivia's flashlight on the ground. He looks for her, seeing her at the other end of a hallway. He calls out to her as he walks towards her. She walks away, and Hugh follows. She appears at the end of another hallway and keeps walking. Hugh gets to the end of the hallway and sees that Olivia has walked to a dead end, but she is not there. He turns around, and she is at the opposite end of the hallway.
He then sees Olivia in front of the massive window in the foyer. He tells her to get away from the window, and the glass shatters. Hugh ducks his head down, and when he stands up, the window is fine, and Olivia is gone. He sees her back where she dropped her flashlight. They hear the kids scream and run downstairs. They tell their parents that they saw a dog run through the house. In all that commotion, Nell returns. She tells them, "I was here the whole time, and none of you could see me."
The drama was supernatural in Hill House, but the drama in the present is much more tangible. Many people's secrets come to light, a lot of dirty laundry is aired, and many unspoken feelings finally get said. The tension when everyone is back together again is palpable. Shirley is shocked to discover that Theo took the money from Steve's book. Then Shirley's husband says they took the money too-he had been using it to keep the business afloat. Later, Steve and Hugh get into a big fight, culminating in Steve yelling, "The wrong parent died."
The second those words leave his mouth, Nell's coffin falls. At that moment, all the hate that was swirling around that room didn't matter anymore. Luke, Steven, and Hugh work together to fix the coffin.
As everyone leaves, the camera pans back to the coffin. We see Nell, The Bent-Neck Lady, and here young Nell's voiceover saying we hear young Nell's voiceover saying, "I was right here. I didn't go anywhere. I was right here."
Random Ramblings
When Hugh arrives at the funeral home and first sees his kids, he sees them as they were at Hill House-this even extends to Nell in the coffin.
After Nell's coffin falls, Sherley gets her makeup kit to fix Nell's makeup. She opens a closet door, and her husband and Theo are there.
