Hill House Rewatch: The Bent-Neck Lady

The reveal in this episode is one of my favorites, so I will spend most of this post talking about it. Last warning, if you haven't seen this episode, go watch it. This is Nell's episode, and there is a lot to love while watching the events leading up to her death. We learn that Nell has sleep paralysis. When this happens, she sees The Bent-Neck Lady shows up. She appeared to Nell on the first night at Hill House and has followed her since they left.

She goes to a sleep study center and meets a tech named Arthur. The two hit it off, and she ends up marrying him. We find out later that since Nell met Arthur, The Bent-Neck Lady stopped showing up. Nell has found happiness and her ghost leaves her. She still experiences sleep paralysis but can get through it more easily since she has Arthur there. Then, eight months after they are married, Arthur has an aneurysm during one of her episodes and dies. When this happens, The Bent-Neck Lady returns. This is when things start spiraling for her, which leads to the big reveal.

Nell is The Bent-Neck Lady.

When Nell arrives back at Hill House, the porch light flashes-Nell is being called home. She enters the house and sees it as it was in the 90s. She sees her family, and they see and acknowledge her as the Nell they knew. Olivia tells her to get ready for bed, and she has something for her in the middle drawer of her dresser. Nell goes and changes into a yellow nightdress. Then they head up to The Red Room for a tea party. I have not mentioned The Red Room yet, and I will not get into it here, but that reveal is as great as the one in this episode.

Nell and Olivia walk up the stairs to The Red Room. When they get to the top of the stairs, Olivia turns around to give Nell a necklace she has with Nell and Luke's pictures in it. Earlier in the episode, there was a flashback where Olivia promised Nell that she would get that when she was older. Olivia puts it around her neck. It is then revealed that Nell has a noose around her neck. Olivia pushes Nell to her death.

Nell's fall doesn't stop when the rope gets taught. She falls through time, visiting herself through the years. I remember when I first saw this and was blown away by this twist and how it was revealed. This episode was where I knew this show was something special.

Random Ramblings

  • One little detail I love is when Nell is staring at Hill House, and the lights come on. The last light to turn on is the porch light, which flashes twice. Once again, Claire is calling her children home.
