Hill House Rewatch: Eulogy
All the Crain children have had an episode thus far in "The Haunting of Hill House." There is still one surviving member of the family that we haven't seen be the centerpiece of an episode. "Eulogy" belongs to the patriarch of the Crane family, Hugh.
This episode takes place on the day of Nell's funeral. The episode opens with Hugh being questioned by a very condescending cop. Everything this cop says sounds like he is on Hugh's side, but the tone of his voice tells us that he is hoping to get Hugh to admit to killing his wife.
We then see Hugh getting ready to go to the funeral. He is talking to someone about his tie. We have seen him seemingly talking to himself a few times during this show. At the funeral, we see that he is talking to Olivia. She is his ghost, though this is never confirmed. In a conversation later in the episode, he tells Luke that he sees Olivia every day and that many widowers have similar experiences. He sees her as she was, not as she ended up. She helps him through many interactions with his children and warns him against pushing Sherley to talk about the Theo situation. He is trying to fix his family, and Olivia is helping. These two people broke the family; Olivia by her actions and Hugh by his words. He is never honest with them about what happened that night.
At Hill House, Hugh is dealing with the aftermath of the storm. There is some mysterious water damage that he and Steven are trying to repair. Even as the extent of the damage grows, Hugh still says, "I can fix it." This is reflected in the present when he seems determined to fix his family. When Sherley's credit card and Theo's car go missing, Hugh tries to speak up and tell them about Luke and what he saw, but he can't, even with Olivia encouraging him. After Steven puts the pieces together, Hugh finally tells them he saw Luke go out for a smoke.
The episode ends where it began, in the police interrogation room. The condescending cop is back at it. There are three hours between Hugh finding Olivia's body and him calling the cops. The cop brings up The Red Room, and while Hugh says they had never been inside, we are shown Hugh running down the hallway towards the Red Room, and the door is open. When Hugh runs inside, the episode ends.
Random Ramblings
One of the touches I love in this episode is that "ghost" Olivia is always out of focus.
Luke sees Nell (the Bent-Neck Lady) and his mother at the gravesite. These sightings are what send him down the path that he goes on for the rest of the season.
After the funeral, Theo sees dirty footprints in the funeral home. She and Hugh follow them into Sherley's office. The model of the forever home is broken and on the floor. Suddenly Olivia comes crawling out from behind the desk, and Theo screams. Hugh keeps saying, "I can fix it."
